I think when I spend too much time navel-gazing, I tend to feel worse. Honestly, I will never discover all the secrets of nature and there’s nothing wrong with spending a day watching “30 Rock” and “Mad Men.” It feels good to embrace entertainment and worldly concerns. You can lose yourself.
Also I tend to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying what students are learning. I have a guiding philosophy when I teach Java (and Intro to Computers): students MUST spend time creating! I’m not as concerned with memorization as I am with creation. They must be able to create programs.
